Privacy Policy

This is a plain factual description of how Webitlio handles data, kept deliberately short so it can actually be read. It is not a legal document and it is not legal advice.

Analytics

Webitlio uses Umami Cloud (cloud.umami.is) to count page views. It was chosen specifically because of what it does not do.

What it records:

The page you viewed (without any search words), and when.
The referring page, if you arrived from a link elsewhere.
Your approximate location (country or region), derived from your IP address at the moment of the request.
General device information: browser, operating system, screen size.

What Umami does not do, according to its own documentation:

No cookies. Umami does not use cookies, so nothing is read back from your device on your next visit.
No identifier on your device. Umami sets no identifier on your device and builds no profile of you.
No cross-site profile. Umami builds no profile of you across other websites.
Your IP address is not stored. It is used at the moment of the request to derive a location.

Search words are not sent to Umami: the analytics tag is set to leave them out of the page address it records.

Advertising (Google AdSense)

Webitlio shows advertising served by Google AdSense. Google and its partners may use cookies and similar technologies to serve ads, including ads based on your previous visits to this or other websites, and to measure ads and prevent abuse. That data is collected by Google, not by Webitlio, and we do not receive it or control it. Google's advertising code may in turn load resources from other Google domains. Google's advertising code loads on every page of this site, including pages that show no ads.

Where the law requires your consent (for example in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland), Google may show a consent message so you can choose before personalised advertising is used.

You can turn off personalised advertising in Google's Ads Settings (https://adssettings.google.com), and you can opt out of some third-party vendors' use of cookies for personalised advertising at https://www.aboutads.info or, in Europe, https://www.youronlinechoices.eu. Cookies and consent

Webitlio itself sets no cookies and stores nothing on your device. Our analytics provider, Umami, does not use cookies. Advertising is different: Google and its advertising partners may set cookies when ads are shown and, where the law requires it, ask for your consent through the message described above.

US state privacy choices

Depending on where you live in the United States, you may have the right to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information for targeted advertising. Google's Ads Settings, linked above, let you control personalised advertising, and where this applies Google may also show a message on this site.

Subscribing to the newsletter sends your email address directly to Buttondown, the email delivery service we use to send it. This site does not run its own mailing list, and your address is never stored here or in any database we operate — Buttondown handles storage, delivery, and unsubscribe requests. Every newsletter email carries an unsubscribe link.

Search

Search is built when you search, not in advance. Webitlio does not store what you search for. Our host, Vercel, may record the page address of each request in its server logs, and that address includes your search words.

Affiliate links

Some pages contain affiliate links, for example to Amazon. They send nothing until you click. After you click, the other site's own privacy practices apply. See Advertising & Affiliate Links.

What else is collected

Nothing beyond the above. There are no reader accounts, no comment system, no contact form, and no social media embeds. Most of the site is static pages, and there is no database of readers.

Webitlio is intended for adult readers. We do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 18.

Hosting

The site is hosted on Vercel, which — like any web host — processes the requests needed to serve pages to you, including your IP address, the page address, your browser details and the time, in its own server infrastructure and logs.
