Apple has changed what iPhone owners see when they check for updates. Since Thursday, people still running iOS 26 get iOS 27.0.1 as the main update in Settings, while the latest iOS 26 release has moved to a smaller “Also Available” section at the bottom. It is a nudge, not a requirement, and it comes just as Apple prepares two more updates for the coming weeks.
What changed in Software Update
iOS 27 was released on September 14, and until now Apple kept it in the secondary position. In that period, iOS 26.7, and later iOS 26.7.1, were the highlighted choice for people who did not want to move up. Reversing the order is Apple’s way of encouraging the switch without forcing it.
iOS 26 is still supported. Apple recommends that anyone who stays on it install at least iOS 26.7.1, which carries the latest security fixes. iOS 27 runs on the same iPhones as iOS 26, so there is no hardware reason to stay behind. Apple has not shared how many people have already updated.
iOS 27.1 is built for iPhone Duo
The next numbered release is a little unusual. Apple has said iPhone Duo will ship with iOS 27.1, which means the update should arrive before the foldable goes on sale on October 23. Pre-orders open on October 16.
Apple skipped the usual beta sequence for 27.1 and went straight to a beta of iOS 27.2, which suggests that 27.1 is mostly there to support the new hardware. If you are not buying a Duo, you can treat it as a minor step.
iOS 27.2 adds Siri AI languages and a new Health app
The bigger update for most people is iOS 27.2, already in developer testing. When iOS 27 launched, the new Siri AI worked only on devices set to English. The first 27.2 beta adds French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish, and Apple had promised those languages for October. Early testers say responses in the new languages can feel slower than in English, which is normal for a first beta.
The beta also includes a redesigned Health app with new insights. Apple says some features need accessories: Health Age requires an Apple Watch, while the VO2 max assessment works with an Apple Watch, AirPods Pro 3 or a compatible third-party heart-rate device. The redesigned Health experience starts in US English only, with more languages to follow later.
Smaller changes include new CarPlay Ultra themes, a setting for sign-language interpretation when it is available, and support for a FaceTime feature that lets compatible services add a human sign-language interpreter to a call. Apple has not announced a release date for iOS 27.2, and features can still change before it ships.
Apps are getting ready for iPhone Duo
On the software side of the foldable, Apple has opened App Store submissions for apps optimized for iPhone Duo. Developers need to rebuild their apps with Xcode 27.1 and can use a tool called Device Hub to see how an app behaves in different poses and orientations.
Existing apps will run on the Duo without any update, but they will not use the entire display. Apps built with the new tools will carry a badge on their store page saying they are optimized for the device. From April 2027, every app submitted to the App Store must include iPhone Duo screenshots, which signals that Apple sees the Duo as a lasting device category.
What to do
If you are still on iOS 26, you can stay there for now as long as you install the latest security update. Moving to iOS 27 is the long-term path, and Apple is now making it the obvious one.
If you want the new Siri languages or the Health redesign, wait for iOS 27.2 rather than installing a beta on your main phone. If you plan to buy an iPhone Duo, expect iOS 27.1 to arrive before delivery, and expect some apps to look stretched until developers update them.
What this means for you
The next two weeks are about timing rather than new features. Updating to iOS 27 is the sensible default, the Duo-related release comes first, and the update most people have been waiting for, with Siri in more languages, follows later in October.
