Apple’s New M6 Mac mini Is Starting to Look Like a Personal AI Machine
Apple has introduced a new Mac mini powered by the M6 chip, and at first glance it looks like the kind of update we have become used to seeing from the company. The same tiny computer gets a faster processor, better graphics and newer connectivity. Look a little closer, though, and the direction Apple is taking with the Mac mini is much more interesting.
This time, Apple is talking about AI almost as much as traditional computing performance. The new M6 model includes a 12-core CPU and 12-core GPU, with Neural Accelerators built into every GPU core. Apple says that combination can deliver up to four times the AI performance of the M4 Mac mini, along with up to twice the graphics performance.
The Mac mini is becoming more than a small desktop
The Mac mini has always had a slightly unusual position in Apple’s lineup. It is cheap enough to be someone’s first Mac, small enough to disappear on a desk and powerful enough to be used for development, editing or even professional workloads.
With the M6 generation, Apple seems to be giving it another role: a computer that can sit on a desk and continuously run AI workloads locally.
That matters because a lot of the AI tools people use today still depend heavily on remote servers. Running models locally can offer better privacy, faster responses in some situations and no dependency on a constant connection to a cloud service.
It also gives developers more freedom to experiment without paying for every request sent to an external AI provider.
The hardware is clearly being built with local AI in mind
The base M6 Mac mini comes with 16GB of unified memory and can be configured with up to 32GB. Memory bandwidth has also increased to as much as 170GB per second. Apple says the new machine can process prompts in LM Studio up to 4.8 times faster than the previous M4 model in its own tests.
Those numbers will need to be tested independently once the machine reaches users, but the more important point is what Apple is optimizing for. AI performance is no longer being treated as a small bonus somewhere on the specification sheet. It is becoming one of the main reasons Apple wants people to upgrade.
The M5 Pro version pushes that idea even further. It can be configured with up to 64GB of unified memory, giving developers enough room to experiment with considerably larger local models without moving to a Mac Studio.
Apple also fixed some of the less exciting things
Not every useful upgrade has to involve artificial intelligence. Both new Mac mini models now support Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and 2.5Gb Ethernet as standard, with 10Gb Ethernet available as an option. The M6 version has three Thunderbolt 4 ports at the back, while the M5 Pro model gets Thunderbolt 5.
These changes are not going to generate the same attention as a new iPhone, but they make sense for a machine that Apple increasingly wants people to use for serious workloads.
The interesting part is where Apple takes it next
The M6 Mac mini starts at $899 and will begin reaching customers on September 22. That makes it more expensive than some previous generations, but also puts a surprisingly capable AI computer within reach of developers and enthusiasts who do not need a laptop or a much larger workstation.
The bigger question is whether people actually want to run more AI locally. Apple clearly thinks they will.
If local models, personal AI agents and private on-device processing continue to improve, the Mac mini could end up being one of the more interesting products in Apple’s lineup. Not because it has a new design or a flashy new feature, but because the little box sitting next to your monitor may slowly turn into something closer to a personal AI server.
For a computer that has traditionally been Apple’s simplest desktop, that would be quite a change.
